How We Evaluate Hospital Beds
Last updated
This page explains how we compare beds, so you can judge our recommendations for yourself. The same method applies to every brand, including any that advertise with us or that a company connected to us sells.
Two kinds of evaluation, clearly labeled
- Specification-based. We compare beds using the manufacturer’s published specifications, prices, and documents, and link each source. Every product comparison currently on this site is specification-based.
- Hands-on. In-person evaluation: measuring heights, checking how the bed moves, looking at assembly and delivery size, and taking our own photos. If we add hands-on work, the page will say exactly what we did and when. [[PENDING: decide whether and how hands-on evaluations and original photos will be done (plan §10, item 6)]]
What we look at
- Category. Is it sold as a hospital bed or as an adjustable bed with hospital-style features? This matters for care plans and safety.
- Height range. The lowest and highest positions, and how they’re measured (to the deck, or to the top of the mattress, with or without casters or legs).
- Positions. Head and knee or foot adjustment, chair position, Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg, and rotation.
- Sizes. Widths and lengths, and options for couples.
- Weight capacity. The stated figure and what it includes.
- Safety features. Rail options, compatible mattresses, brakes, battery backup, and emergency lowering.
- Look and fit in the home. Finishes, hidden components, headboard options, and how close it sits to the wall.
- Ownership costs. Published price, what’s included, delivery options, warranty, and return terms.
Which beds we include
- We include beds that fit the reader’s need, whether or not any company connected to us sells them.
- We include a bed only when we can verify its key specifications from the manufacturer. If a figure isn’t published, we say so.
- When we don’t rank, we list beds alphabetically and say so. When we do rank or name “best for” picks, we explain the reasons on the page.
What we don’t do
- We don’t publish star ratings or scores without hands-on evaluation to back them up.
- We don’t copy or summarize customer reviews from sellers’ sites as if they were our own findings.
- We don’t let payment change a bed’s inclusion, order, or verdict. Sponsored placements, if any, appear outside our comparisons and are labeled.
